March 6, 2021, | Young Kashmiri politician and rights activist Atif Maqbool has raised an urgent appeal to the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), calling for justice regarding the newly introduced law in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). Under this law, a candidate is not required to hold a formal degree to contest in the upcoming general elections, a decision that has been approved by the President of Azad Kashmir.
Atif Maqbool, an outspoken political rights advocate, has condemned this law as a setback for progress and development, labeling it a direct threat to the region’s future. He emphasized that this move undermines the principles of modern democratic governance and allows unqualified individuals to gain political power, potentially setting back years of hard-won progress. Despite his calls for its repeal, there has been no positive response from the AJK government.
With general elections set to take place in August 2021, Atif has voiced concerns over the political landscape in the region. He fears that this new law could pave the way for wealthy and influential individuals to manipulate the electoral process, undermining the people’s right to fair and transparent governance.
For over seventy-five years, the people of Kashmir have endured oppression, with their voices often unheard on the global stage. Atif Maqbool has now called on the International Organization for Democracy (IOD) to intervene and ensure that democratic principles are upheld in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
As elections approach, this appeal serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of justice, fairness, and the rule of law. Atif hopes that the IOD will take swift action, helping to safeguard democracy in the region and ensuring that the voice of the people remains central in political processes.
