Atif Maqbool, has strongly criticized the new electoral law passed in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly, calling it an “Enemy of Education” and a threat to the educated Jammu Kahmir.
The recently approved law allows even illiterate individuals to contest elections and become members of the Assembly. Atif Maqbool argues that this law undermines the foundation of modern democratic society by promoting illiteracy in leadership. In his view, the law is a grave mistake, especially in an era where education is the key to progress and development. He states, “Without education, a person is blind. If the leaders of a nation are illiterate, what will happen to that nation?”
The political leadership in Azad Kashmir is already plagued by illiteracy, with many leaders holding positions not through merit, but through inherited political power. The new law, according to Maqbool, will pave the way for illiterate landlords and individuals with no education to dominate the political scene, further eroding the democratic system in the region. He warns that this will only strengthen the tribalism, prejudice, and nationalism that already undermine the political landscape of Azad Kashmir.
Atif Maqbool emphasizes that development in the modern world is impossible without education, and that the AJK political system must evolve to reflect the values of modern democratic governance. He calls on political rights activists, the Supreme Court of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and the Election Commission of AJK to review and withdraw this controversial law, urging them to establish a political system rooted in justice, fairness, and education—values essential for the progress of any modern society.
The future of Azad Jammu and Kashmir depends on the quality of its leadership. Atif Maqbool believes that without educated leaders committed to justice and development, the region will remain mired in darkness. It’s time for the political system to evolve and embrace a brighter, more inclusive future.
